Council to fund junior sport stars - Media ReleasePort Stephens Council is calling for nominations from outstanding local sportspeople as part of its Sports Star Junior Development Scheme. Council donates the proceeds of its Port Stephens Sports Star Awards night to local junior sports stars who require financial support. This year $7000 is available for grants. Speaking today Port Stephens Mayor, Councillor Ron Swan, who is also President of the Port Stephens Sports Council, said the initiative was something Council was particularly proud of. “We are extremely pleased that the outstanding success of our Sports Awards night has enabled us to make a real difference to the sporting aspirations of local young people,” he said. “In particular, we are seeking people who have difficulty meeting the financial burden of pursuing their chosen sport.” “I certainly appreciate how expensive some sporting pursuits have become and it is often the best athletes that are asked to travel furthest, and required to use the most expensive equipment.” “We see our role as helping out with those costs to assist young people reach their full potential.” “Applications close on 31 July and are open to local residents 17 years or younger as at 31 December this year.” “Each individual will be eligible for up to $1000 each”
