Council Power Meters create a real buzz for Port Residents - Media ReleasePort Stephens Council has been inundated with requests after offering residents free Power Meters three weeks ago. Council launched the program to offer Power Meters for loan at no expense through Port Stephens Council libraries. After commencing with 10 meters, a further 10 have been ordered with over 25 people on the waiting list. The meters allow residents to ascertain where electricity is being wasted in their household and take steps to reduce their costs and greenhouse gas emissions. Speaking today, Council’s Environmental Education & Sustainability Officer Duncan Jinks, said with electricity prices due to soar in the future the concern of residents was understandable. “A local resident came up with the idea to purchase and make available individual power meters to help residents get a handle on where electricity is being used around the home. We had no idea whether people would take up this offer,” he said. “This is an easy way to answer some of those questions you’ve always had about why your electricity bill costs what it does.” “The potential savings to be made really depend on your individual household circumstances, and how efficient your electricity use is currently.” “One Nelson Bay family was able to save in the order of $450 per year through simple changes to the amount of standby power they used, switching off the second fridge and reducing the number of hours their pool pump was operating.”
“I would suggest to anyone concerned about the environment to conduct an energy audit of your house, save yourself some money and reduce your carbon footprint at the same time.” Contact details |
