The Port Stephens Council and the Hunter Region Botanic Garden is celebrating spring with a new exhibition at the new look Mezzanine Art Gallery called ‘The Hunter Flora Heritage Collection’.
Opening on Tuesday, 2 September by Dr Jan Noble, Chair of the Hunter Region Botanic Gardens, the exhibition features the work of leading natural history artist Chris Rockley.
Ms Rockley worked closely with the plant collectors from the Garden’s Herbarium to illustrate a selection of Hunter plant specimens collected as part of a five year sponsorship by Tomago Aluminium. Speaking today, Community Planner Chloe Beevers said the exhibition gave an insight into the specialised skill of botanic illustration and the significance of herbarium collections to science. "Collecting plant specimens takes time, knowledge and eye for detail," she said. "The remarkable illustrations will make you feel as though you’re walking through the gardens on a beautiful spring day," Ms Beevers continued. "Everyone is welcome to attend the opening tomorrow, at 3pm, which will feature entertainment by the Port Stephens Community Choir and a talk from the artist Chris Rockley," said Ms Beevers. On display until 30 September, The Hunter Flora Heritage Collection is free to view from 8.30am to 5pm each week day at the Mezzanine Gallery, Raymond Terrace.
