Students vs. Councillors in great Youth Debate - Media release

Port Stephens Councillors and high school students will go head to head on Monday 3 August during Council’s Local Government (LG) Week Youth Debate.

Port Stephens Council is celebrating LG Week 2009 next week with a number of events for the local community including the Youth Debate in Council Chambers.

Four high school groups will debate each other on the topic – ‘Everything I need I can find in Port Stephens’ before they combine their efforts to convince the Councillors ‘The age to vote should be lowered to 16 years old’.

Speaking today Port Stephens Mayor Cr Bruce MacKenzie who will lead the Councillors team said he can’t wait for the debate.

"For the first time, the students will be debating against the Councillors," he said.

"It should be a lot of fun, I like a good challenge and I know these youngsters will keep us on our toes."

Joining the Mayor on the Councillors debating team will be Cr Sally Dover, Cr Glenys Francis and Cr Geoff Dingle,

Students from Tomaree High School, Irrawang High School, St Phillips Christian College and Hunter River High School will make up the combined student team.

The Youth Debate will run as follows;

Topic ‘Everything I need I can find in Port Stephens’

10am – 11am: Tomaree High School vs. Irrawang High School

11am – 12pm: St Phillips Christian College vs. Hunter River High School

Topic ‘The age to vote should be lowered to 16 years old’

12.30pm – 1.30pm: Combined students team vs. Councillors team

Every person over 18 years of age who attends a LG Week event can go in the draw to win a weekend package at the Council owned Samurai Beach Resort.

"So come on and get involved with your Council this week, you’ve got nothing to lose and a holiday to win," said Cr MacKenzie.
