Media Release Port Stephens Council bans smoking at all sporting fieldsLast modified: November 1, 2009 - 1:15 PM
Port Stephens Council will introduce a smoking ban at all sporting fields this month as part of its recently adopted smoke-free outdoor policy. Adopted in December 2008, Port Stephens Council’s smoke-free outdoor policy includes children’s playgrounds, alfresco dining areas and beaches, as well as parks and reserves. Speaking today, Environmental Services Manager Bruce Petersen said the Council is cooperating with the community to implement the policy. “We want to work with the community to educate them about the health risks of smoking, which is why we’ve introduced the policy in stages.” “The policy was first introduced to children’s playground and now it’s time to start implementing the smoking ban to sporting fields,” said Mr Petersen. “Council consulted the sporting community before introducing the ban and all of the five sports councils in Port Stephens have supported the policy.” Heart Foundation research shows that children exposed to second hand smoke in outdoor areas such as sports fields are at increased risk of asthma, SIDS, respiratory infection and ear problems “Signage at sport facilities will commence this month however it will be phased in and will take a while for all facilities to be completed,” said Mr Petersen. “Failure to comply with a sign in a public place may result in a $220 on the spot fine however Council will rely on cooperation and education rather than taking a heavy handed approach,” he continued. Port Stephen’s Council developed its policy using Smoke-Free Outdoor Areas – A Resource Kit For Local Government. Cancer Council, Heart Foundation, Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) and Australian Medical Association NSW developed the kit with support from The Local Government Shires Association of NSW.
