Rebuilding with Books

Between 24 - 31 October Port Stephens Library is raising funds to help families who were devastated by the Victorian bushfires. The Tomaree and Raymond Terrace Library branches will hold a book sale during this period and all profits from sales will go to the ALIA Rebuilding with Books campaign.

A morning tea will also be held at Tomaree Library at 10:00am on Friday 23rd October and Raymond Terrace Library on Friday 30th October.  A gold coin donation is all that is required and profits from the morning tea will also go towards the campaign. This national campaign aims to provide every household in bushfires affected communities with a voucher to purchase one new book for their home.

Please join us and help provide families with a special Christmas present, the gift of new books.

Kids Who Read Succeed - Program Evaluation Report

The KWRS pilot project, funded by the Hunter Area Assistance Scheme, has been a successful early literacy program for children aged 0-5 years. The three year project, undertaken in the Irrawang community of Raymond Terrace, was coordinated by Port Stephens Council and delivered by Library Services from April 2005 to April 2008.

The project involved paid staff and volunteers visiting homes of children in the local Irrawang community one morning a week and reading to the children at their place of residence. A book from the Library was loaned to the child and exchanged the following week. This program has had significant impact on participating families and the broader community. It particularly influenced those vulnerable families that traditionally remain isolated from the general community. The results of this project include improved early literacy for children, parents bonding with their children in a more positive way and families developing self-confidence to participate in community activities.

The project was evaluated by the Family Action Centre at the University of Newcastle and a copy of the Evaluation Report is available via the links below. For further information please contact Vicki James, Children's Literacy Co-ordinator at vicki.james@portstephens.nsw.gov.au or Kris Abbott, Library Services Manager at kris.abbott@portstephens.nsw.gov.au or telephone (02) 4980 0221.
