Hazardous Waste Disposal including chemicals, sharps and other 'Wicked Wastes'Last modified: November 10, 2009 - 10:12 AM
Discover the correct recycling / disposal methods for chemicals, mobile phones, batteries, community sharps, fluorescent tubes etc There are various items that should NOT be placed in either of your household garbage or recycling bins.
These include:
Plastic check-out bags These are generally chemicals or toxic items that have contaminants such as heavy metals in them so disposing of them in landfills can create an environmental hazard. If placed in our household garbage bins, hazardous wastes also have the potential to contaminate compost produced at the Bedminster plant. It is therefore important to dispose of these products correctly. Download the Wicked Waste Directory below to view the correct recycling / disposal facility for each of these types of waste (shown in alphabetical order). Disposing of ChemicalsOld and leftover chemicals can be harmful to humans if they are left lying around and harmful to the environment if they are disposed of incorrectly. Port Stephens Council, in conjunction with the NSW Department of Environment and Conservation operate an annual ‘Chemical CleanOut’ for Port Stephens residents. This is a FREE disposal service to encourage the return, reuse and recycling of household chemicals. Drop-off centres accept household quantities of materials including unwanted or unused paint, paint related products, pesticides, herbicides, poisons, solvents and household cleaners, motor oils, fuels, batteries, gas bottles, fire extinguishers, pool or hobby chemicals, and fluorescent tubes. Contact Council or call the CleanOut Information line on 131 555 to find out when the next Chemical CleanOut is on in the Port Stephens area. Also see below for the most recent Chemical CleanOut brochure. During 2010 there will be two Chemical Cleanout's in Port Stephens: 1) Port Stephens Council Administration building at 116 Adelaide St, Raymond Terrace on the Saturday 13th March. 2) Salamander Bay Waste Transfer Station on Saturday 27th March. The Waste Transfer Station will be closed to all other wastes drop-offs on the day. Disposing of Community SharpsCommunity sharps include needles, syringes, lancets and similar equipment used for healthcare needs for humans or animals or by injecting drug users. Community sharps, needles and syringes can cause injury if they are not disposed of properly.
Port Stephens Council provides five community sharps bin that are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Disposal is FREE of charge to all residents. A yellow sharps container or heavy duty plastic bottle can be used to dispose of the sharps in the community sharps bins. To view where the community sharps bins are located, see the attachments below for the Community Sharps brochure. If you find community sharps in a public place call the Needle Clean Up Hotline on 1800 633 353.
