Tidy Towns & Landcare Committees

Last modified: October 11, 2007 - 11:33 AM

Are you interested in volunteering for your environment??  Would you like to help protect our parks and reserves??  Then come along and join one of our Landcare or Tidy Towns groups.

Port Stephens Council supports 15 Tidy Towns and Landcare Committees across the local government area. The Committees undertake a range of environmental and community work throughout the year, in parks, reserves, bushland areas, foreshores and schools.

The work the Committees undertake includes but is not limited to:

  • Bush regeneration
  • Weed eradication
  • Tree planting
  • Water quality monitoring & Bug Watch (Waterwatch)
  • Litter removal and prevention
  • Monitoring and surveying native fauna and flora
  • Community education
  • Stormwater stencilling
  • Foreshore erosion control projects
  • Construction of walking path, boardwalk and vehicle barriers to protect bushland
  • Develop and implement interpretative / education signs / programs
  • Funding applications
  • Developing and implementing works programs and management plans.

The following equipment and materials are provided to the Committees by Port Stephens Council to assist them, these include:

  • Training days for the Committees eg Water Quality Monitoring & Weed Removal.
  • Two Community Tool Trailers, which are available for Committees to book out and use for working bees.
  • Council Officers assist Committees with environmental technical advise, funding applications and the development of programs.
  • An Overall Tidy Towns & Landcare Coordinating Group is attended by members of each Committee quarterly.
  • A variety of materials and equipment

Environmental Funding from Port Stephens Council is available on an annual basis. The Tidy Towns Program has been running for 21 years, with Soldiers Point - Salamander Bay Tidy Towns & Landcare Committee being NSW Tidiest Town in 2001, and Australia's Tidiest Town in 2002.

Port Stephens Council covers the entry fees for the Committees to enter into the program, and also takes up to four members from each Committee to the presentation weekend held in November each year. Contact us if you would like further information on Tidy Towns or Landcare in the Port Stephens Local Government Area, or would like to join an existing group or start a group in an area.
